Abstract

Background: The resemblance of the developmental anatomy of the chicken to that of mammals makes it a suitable animal model for understanding the human biological systems. In this study, histological structure of cornea of chick embryos was observed at four developmental stages.

Methodology: This laboratory-based experimental study was conducted at the Anatomy Department, Regional Center, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan, Islamabad. After obtaining ethical approval, a total of 70 fertilized eggs of Gallus domesticus were procured from the Poultry Research Institute, Punjab, Rawalpindi. The selected eggs were incubated under standard laboratory conditions. The chick cornea’s histological development was studied at 4 distinct post-incubation stages: at 10th (n=30), 15th (n=30) post-incubation day, newly hatched chicks (n=5), and adult chickens (n=5).

Conclusion: The thickness of cornea reaches at day 10 of incubation was 171 µ with thickness of stroma 160 µ.   At day 15 of development this thickness was 145 µ with thickness of stroma 130 µ. The thickness of cornea of newly hatched chick was about 170--200 µ with thickness of stroma 135 µ.  In adults total thickness of cornea is about 250--300 µ with thickness of stroma about 200 µ. This laboratory research presents differentiation of chick cornea at different phases of development which may contribute to the anatomical knowledge of corneal embryology as well as providing a comparative background for pathological deviances.
